Acquisition Information

SAFR-02200
Field collection by San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park library staff in 2012. Notes accompanying the photographs suggest that they originally had been filed with a transcript of an oral history interview of Sam Hort conducted by Karl Kortum in 1974. Note, however, that a brief review of the transcript did not find any reference to the ship TONAWANDA, but the schooner WILLIAM H. SMITH is discussed.

Historical or Biographical Note

Sam Hort was born in 1902 in Australia. He served as a crewmember aboard FOREST FRIEND (barkentine, 5m), FORT LARAMIE (schooner, 6m), HOUGOMONT (bark, 4m), WESTFIELD (barkentine, 4m), and WILLIAM H. SMITH (built 1899; schooner, 4m).
