    Abstract: The mining collection at the Doris Foley Library is comprised of books, mine maps, public records and newspapers containing information on the rich mining history of Nevada County. Beginning in 1848 with panning during the Gold Rush, and continuing through hydraulic and hardrock mining which ended in the mid 1950s, Nevada County has the distinction of being the top gold producing county in California.

    Acquisition Information

    Historical records and dozens of maps created by Nevada County and the cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City have been deposited the the Doris Foley Library Library for Historical Research.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    Many public records and mining related maps of the governmental entities in the County are housed in the Doris Foley Library for Historical Research. Additionally, the Library has a large collection of local newspapers on microfilm beginning in the 1850s (some of which have an index of mining related articles). The Library also has a selection of mining related books and periodicals covering the geologic and mining history of the county.
