Biography/History
Willard Lee Marmelzat, M.D., was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He received his
M.D. at Tulane University School of Medicine in 1944. Passionate about music, Marmelzat was
awarded the William Osler Medal of American Association of the History of Medicine for his
M.D. thesis about the history of the relationship between doctors and music. He developed
his thesis into a book,
Musical Sons of Aesculpius, published
in 1946. After medical school, Marmelzat served as a Navy physician on the USS New Jersey
before permanently residing in Los Angeles, California. He established himself as a renowned
dermatologist and author of multiple works pertaining to the history of medicine. Dr.
Marmelzat died at the age of 93 in Los Angeles.
