Biography/Administrative History

Neil Clemans was born on February 7, 1920 in Seattle. In 1942 he enlisted in the US Army Air Forces and served throughout World War II. After the war, he graduated with a degree in journalism from USC and, in 1947, began working at the Valley News. In 1948, he began working as a photographer at the Los Angeles Mirror from its inception to its closure. He covered stars, sports and news of the 1950s. When the paper closed in 1962, Neil became a publicist for NBC. He worked on numerous television shows, including The Wonderful World of Disney, Bonanza, The Virginian, I Dream of Jeannie, the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Dean Martin Show and Andy Williams Show. After leaving NBC public relations, Clemans operated a Postal Instant Press with his wife Glida. Clemans received a Lifetime achievement award from the Los Angeles Press Photographer’s Association and is a member of the NBC Press Hall of Fame. He passed away on April 20, 2009 survived by his wife Gilda and two daughters and grandchildren.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection spans 1963-1972 and includes press releases, notes, photographs, clippings, interdepartmental correspondence and status reports in which Clemans details set visits and promotional strategies for NBC TV shows of the 1960s. Shows represented include The Dean Martin Show, The Golddiggers, Get Smart, Bonanza, The Jimmy Stewart Show, Then Came Bronson, The Virginian, T.H.E. Cat and I Dream of Jeannie. The collection also includes research and publicity photos from The Mickey Mouse Anniversary Show, which aired December 1968. In addition to publicity files, the collection includes a few scripts. Aired episodes have been added to the library catalog. Titles include Bonanza, T.H.E. Cat, 90 Bristol Court, The Virginian, and a Wonderful World of Disney TV film: The Tattooed Police Horse (1964).
