Biography/Administrative History
Alan James Galloway was born on February 7, 1904 in London, England. In 1925, he received his B.A. with honors in Natural
Science from King’s College, Cambridge, England. That same year, Galloway came to the United States and joined Shell Oil
Company as a Geologist in Bakersfield, California.
In 1934, Galloway was appointed Vice President of Shell Oil Company, the youngest in the company’s history. In 1940 he became
an U.S. citizen; in 1953 was elected Director of Shell until his retirement in 1958. He became a Research Associate with
the Geology Department of the California Academy of Sciences in 1961. In 1965, he became the Academy’s Chairman of the Board
of Trustees after serving as its Vice-Chairman in 1964.
Mr. Galloway was a member of the California Academy of Sciences (since 1926), the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical
Engineers, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Geologists’ Association. He was the author of The Geology
of the Point Reyes Peninsula, published by the State of California in February 1978.
Alan James Galloway died on August 16, 1978 in Carmel Valley, California.
