Biographical / Historical
William Henry Weinland (1861-1930) was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In 1884 he
graduated from the Moravian College and Theological Seminary in Bethlehem and in March 1885
he married Caroline Yost. The same year the couple went to Bethel, Alaska to serve as
missionaries to the Alaskan Natives. When ill-health in the family forced them to return to
the United States, Weinland became pastor of the Moravian Church at Gracehill, Ohio from
1887 to 1889, until he was assigned to work among the Native Americans of Southern
California. The Weinlands devoted nearly forty years to missionary work among the Native
Americans, especially at the Morongo Indian Reservation near Banning, California.
Scope and Contents
A collection of approximately 2,100 items from 1853 to 1946, which contains letters,
manuscripts, 39 diaries, documents, and drawings related to the life and activities of
William Henry Weinland, Caroline Yost Weinland, and the extended Weinland family. The
materials focus on their missionary work for the Moravian Church in Alaska and on the
Morongo Indian Reservation near Banning, California. Correspondents represented in the
collection include Samuel M. Brosius (writing on behalf of the Indian Rights Association),
Paul De Schweinitz, and Amelia Stone Quinton. Two separate series in the collection include
the Rock family letters from 1911 to 1916, which were written from an Alaskan mission, and
the Gilman family papers from 1853 to 1946, which include correspondence, land papers, and
historical notes on the Banning area. The collection also includes two boxes of uncataloged
addenda.
