Abstract: This collection contains one hand-made book documenting A. Clifford Johnson's experiences on the Sierra Club's 1930 High Trip.
Included in the book are typed descriptions of his day-to-day activities, names of people he met, and his reflections throughout
the trip. In addition to typed text, Johnson has glued small black and white photos – likely cut from a contact sheet – illustrating
some of the destinations on his trip.

Due to its small size, this collection has not been arranged by an archivist. The materials are arranged in the order in which
they were received from the donor.
Little is known about A. Clifford Johnson's involvement in the Sierra Club. According to the Sierra Club High Trip personnel
list, he was in attendance during the 1930 High Trip and resided in Whittier, CA at the time. No other information is known
about his affiliation with Sierra Club.
A. Clifford Johnson moved from Indiana to Whittier, CA in 1898 after marrying Susan Harrison. While working at the Whittier
National Trust and Savings Bank, Johnson rose from cashier to the bank's first president. Johnson also served on the Board
of Trustees for Whittier College from 1902 to 1946, where his wife became one of the first female professors in the country,
teaching Greek and Latin. The couple also donated financially to the college and donated the "Susan and Clifford Johnson Library
of Quaker Literature," perhaps the largest collection of books by and about Quakers in the west. A. Clifford Johnson further
contributed to the community in Whittier through his positions as a City Councilman, a charter member of the Rotary Club,
and a founding member of the Board of Trade.

Processed by Joanna Black in April, 2021. Included with the original donation was a typed note from donor Naomi Binford, great
niece of Clifford Johnson, stating: "Dear friends, Enclosed is the account my Great Uncle Clifford Johnson made of a Sierra
Club trip he took in 1930. I thought you might like to have it to put in your archives or publish – whatever. Many years later
I too had many wonderful trips with the Sierra Club. Sincerely, Naomi Binford (Kirschner)." No other description was included
with the item.

the trip. He mentions the construction of the John Muir Trail as well as future plans to build a "hut" on John Muir Pass.
Locations Johnson mentions included Rock Creek, Mono Creek, Muir Pass, Colby Meadows, Palisade Creek, and Bishop Pass. The
trip officially lasted from July 7 to July 31, 1930, although Johnson's entries only cover July 7 to July 27. In addition
to typed text, Johnson has glued small black and white photos – likely cut from a contact sheet – illustrating some of the
destinations on his trip. Johnson also notes in his text that trip participants included Sierra Club leaders William Colby,
Marion Parsons, and Ansel Adams.
