Biographical / Historical

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Oceanographic Society began in 1969 and continued until approximately 1981. The goal of the organization was to preserve the natural environment and resources of the coastal area; foster education programs leading to awareness, appreciation and support for the marine environment; and to encourage support of marine sciences. The Society additionally sought to sponsor, plan and develop a shoreline and tideland biological reserve on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
There were 251 charter members of the organization. Membership ranged from students and educators to scientists. The organization held monthly meetings which featured presentations on the natural environment of the Peninsula.
