Series I. Chronological files, 1954-1984, 1990-2022

Physical Description: 12 Linear Feet
Physical Description: 3.74 GB (2,603 files)
Physical Description: (12 boxes)

Scope and Content Note

These press clippings document publicity and media coverage received by the J. Paul Getty Museum and the J. Paul Getty Trust and date from 1954 to 1984, and 1990 to 2022.
Press clipping subjects include J. Paul Getty's family and his associates, Getty's bequest to the museum, acquisitions, events, exhibitions, governance, the Getty programs, Getty staff and trustees, and the Getty Center and Villa, including the opening of the Brentwood Center in 1997. All Getty programs, including those no longer in operation, are represented in the collection.
In 2014 Trust Communications began to distribute press clippings in an email digest format. The email digest is comprised of full article text and article excerpts. Some articles have a .pdf scan of the printed publication attached, while others contain a link to the external online publication. The external links were functional at the time the material was captured however access to these publications cannot be guaranteed in the future. Some articles contain links to the Getty website; these were functional at the time of capture. Since the material was received in email format and then transformed into .pdf files, each digest contains email administrative metadata such as name of recipient, name of sender, date, and subject. In 2022 Communications began publishing and disseminating the email digest in web format and material began to be captured as .mhtml files; external links were functional at the time of capture. Institution-wide press clippings from 1985-1992 are missing in this series, although such materials appear in the subject files, microfilmed and mircofiched press clippings, and magazine series. Please note that duplication is to be expected. It is not presumed that this collection is comprehensive for any given year, except from 2015 to 2022.

Organization

The clippings are listed in chronological order under the entity that collected the materials.
In 2014 Institutional Archives began receiving digital press clippings by email in the digest format. For each year, the clippings are arranged chronologically by month, and within each month by date.

Series II. Subject files, 1955-2009, 2013-2014

Physical Description: 54.15 Linear Feet (53 boxes, 2 flatfiles)

Scope and Content Note

These press clippings, both original newsprints and photocopies, reflect the publicity and coverage the Getty received in various news and media outlets, 1955-2009. The press clippings from 1955 to 1984 were probably collected from various news sources by the staff of the early Museum and later by Director Stephen Garrett. The clippings from 1984 to 2009 were collected by the Department of Public Affairs (1983-1999) and the Trust Communications department (2000-present).
Press clipping subjects include, but are not limited to, J. Paul Getty's family and his associates, his bequest to the museum, acquisitions, events, exhibitions, the Getty programs, Getty trustees, and the Getty Center and Villa. All Getty programs, including those no longer in operation, are represented in the collection. Year-end trustee packets and Museum year-end roundups are listed under the Getty programs heading. Note that duplication is to be expected. It is not presumed that this collection is comprehensive for any given subject.

Organization

The Getty bequest to the museum and the Getty family subject headings have been listed first, followed by an alphabetical listing by subject. Because of a need to align materials to primary Getty functions, subject headings and subheadings do not strictly correspond to original categories.

Series III. Microfilmed and microfiched press clippings, 1972-1990

Physical Description: 2.08 Linear Feet (3 boxes)
Physical Description: (5 rolls of microfilm and 2 sets of microfiche in three small boxes)

Scope and Content Note

The following list reproduces inventories and indices of the microform press clippings of the J. Paul Getty Trust, 1972-1990. The clippings on mircofilm, 1972-1990, were collected, filmed, and inventoried by Getty Trust offices in the Century City neigborhood of Los Angeles (it is unclear which department, if any, held responsibility for them), while the clippings on microfiche were compiled by the Trust's Department of Public Affairs.
The original copy of the microfilm inventory, apparently created when the paper clippings were filmed, notes that the clippings were "filmed in the exact order in which they were" filed at the "Trust offices in Century City" and that there was no attempt to alter the original organization. Subject headings and subheadings included in the inventory were copied directly from file folders in which the original materials were housed.
The indices to the clippings on microfiche were created by the Department of Public Affairs, apparently for their own internal use. Two sets of microfiche were originally made: one was given to the Archives, the second was kept by the originating department. Documentation accompanying the indices explains that subject headings followed by a parenthetical number are continued on more than one microfiche.

Organization

The press clippings have been divided into three categories, each of which contains a mixture of integrated headings by program, department, and/or subject.

Series IV. Magazines, 1967, 1975, 1978, 1984-2008, undated

Physical Description: 11.98 Linear Feet (15 boxes, 1 flatfile)

Scope and Content Note

These press clippings reflect the publicity and coverage the J. Paul Getty Trust received in art, tourist, and popular magazines, 1975, 1978, and 1984-2008. Accruals are expected.
The magazine articles feature Getty collections, programs, buildings, etc. Most of the magazine articles are original, although some are photocopies. Entire issues have been retained only when the Getty-related article is the cover story. Note that not all years are represented, nor is the collection comprehensive for any given year. Magazine clippings also have been collected in the Series I. Chronological files, Series II. Subject files, and Series III. Microfilm and microfiched press clippings, so duplication is to be expected.

Organization

Materials are arranged in chronological order. Seasonal publications (Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn) are placed in the month during which that season begins in the Northern Hemisphere. Publications that bridge months (May/June) or years (Dec 1997/Jan 1998) are placed with the earliest month/year represented by that issue.
