Purchased from Fred Lockley, July 1952.
Adam C. Higgins, native of Virginia, moved to Monmouth, Illinois, before the American Civil War. In August 1862 he became
chaplain of in the 83rd Regiment of Illinois Infantry, with the rank of Captain. After he was discharged from the service
in 1865, he returned to the ministry. In 1896 he practiced law in Chicago.
Collection is comprised of letters and documents mostly relating to Adam C. Higgins' chaplain's duties in his regiment. Some
letters contain discussion of camp life and military operations, including the Battle of Fort Donelson; there are two letters
addressed to General William S. Rosecrans. Among the manuscripts, there is a poem by Adam C. Higgins entitled "The Dead of
Fort Donelson."
