The collection contains records created by the City of Sacramento's Real Estate and Street Assessment Division. This includes street assessment books from around 1851 to 1975; street improvement files from circa 1890 to 1947; property value, tax, and sale records; records of lots with dimensions and values; records of vacancies of lots; City of Sacramento property for sale; tax sales to the city; and other records.

The City of Sacramento Real Estate and Street Assessment Division was a division of the Office of the City Engineer. It handled City of Sacramento real estate properties, assessments of streets and alleys for improvements, and making improvements to curbs, sidewalks, lighting, storm and sanitary sewers, water systems, and gutters.
