Biographical Note
Iwashita Kiyochika (June 19, 1857 - March 19, 1928), also known as Iwashita Seishu, was a businessman and statesman. He joined
the trading company, Mitsui Bussan in 1878; he had posts in the United States and France. He later founded and became president
of Shinagawa Dento. In 1891, he began to serve as the deputy general manager and the general manager of the Osaka branch of
Mitsui Bank. After leaving the bank in 1896, he participated in the founding of Kitahama Ginko (Kitahama Bank) and later became
the president. He was also involved in the management of Toyoda Loom Works Ltd., Osaka Denki Kido, and Minoo-Arima Denki Kido.
In 1915, he was arrested and convicted on breach of trust and misappropriation charges due to his activities at Kitahama Bank.
Scope and Content of Collection
The Iwashita Kihei papers includes 21 letters addressed to Iwashita Kiyochika relating to reconnaissance missions in Singapore
and Riau Islands. Included in the correspondence is a manuscript map drawn in 1908 of Singapore and the Riau Islands.
