    Biographical / Historical

Camilla Treadwell was abroad when World War I was declared. She entered the service of the American Red Cross in Paris, France. Her work as a nurse on the field of battle, often near the front of the lines, was commended by the commanders of the allied armies, who bestowed on her the highest decorations, among them the cross of the French Legion of Honor. Treadwell also was made honorary corporal by a unit of the famous French "Blue Devils." She was wounded several times in action.

    Scope and Contents

The papers of Camilla Treadwell mainly consist of photographs (negatives and and black-and-white), depicting her services as a nurse overseas during the war, including photographs of soldiers and other nurses. There are 15 items of correspondence, almost half in French, organized chronologically. Much of the correspondence is from New York State Bank concerning a loan. Ephemera includes business cards, empty envelopes, identity cards, individual booklets, a map, blank postcards, receipts, and invoices.
