Biography

Steven Mailloux is a critical theorist and Professor Emeritus of English at the University of California, Irvine. He is currently President's Professor of Rhetoric at Loyola Marymount University.
Mailloux was born in La Jolla, California on March 23, 1950. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Loyola University, Los Angeles in 1972, his Master of Arts in English from the University of Southern California (USC) in 1974, and his Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Linguistics, and Literature, also from the USC, in 1977. He is married to Mary Ann (Molly) Mailloux and has three children, Mary, Roman, and Theresa.
Mailloux began his academic career as Assistant Professor of English at Temple University from 1977-1979. He also taught at the University of Miami from 1979-1986 and Syracuse University from 1986-1991. He became Professor of English from 1991-2010 and Chancellor's Professor of Rhetoric from 2001-2010 at the University of California, Irvine, where he taught rhetoric, critical theory, and U.S. cultural studies. He also served in several administrative positions during his years at UCI including Associate Dean of Humanities for Graduate Study from 1994-1999, Acting Director of the UC Humanities Research Institute in 1998, Director of the Critical Theory Emphasis from 2003-2008, and Interim Chair of English and Comparative Literature from 2002-2003. For the latter position, he received on-the-job training from 1986-1989 as Chair of English at Syracuse University when that department initiated a comprehensive reform of its literature curriculum in the direction of critical theory and cultural studies. He became the President's Professor of Rhetoric at Loyola Marymount University in 2009.
Mailloux is the author of six books, including Disciplinary Identities: Rhetorical Paths of English, Speech, and Composition (2006), Reception Histories: Rhetoric, Pragmatism, and American Cultural Politics (1998, reissued in 2009), and Rhetorical Power (1989, reissued in 2009), as well as numerous essays, shorter publications, and conference papers. He has also served as an Editorial Board Member for journals such as Advances in the History of Rhetoric (2015-present); Philosophy and Rhetoric (1994-present); Pre/Text (1992-present); Works and Days (1995-present); Conversations (2011-2014); and Western Journal of Communication (2012-13).
In 2004, Mailloux was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to lecture at Summer School in the Humanities, Moscow State University, Russian Federation.

Collection Scope and Content Summary

This collection comprises the professional papers of Steven Mailloux, which document his career as a professor and scholar of Critical Theory. Materials in the collection include drafts of his books, unpublished materials, and essays and reviews with related notes and correspondence; conference papers with related correspondence; and general (professional) correspondence.

Collection Arrangement

The collection is organized in the following three series:
Series 1. Writings, 1965-2018. 9 linear feet Series 2. Conference papers, 1975-2018. 6.5 linear feet Series 3. Correspondence, 1976-2018. 2.5 linear feet

Appraisal

During processing the collection increased from 17 linear feet to 18 linear feet, due to the overfilling of boxes before transfer. Duplicates, personally identifiable information, financial records, and material under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) were removed from the collection.
