Abstract: The Sacramento Sports Commission Records document the life of the commission, its non-profit funding, its economic relationship with the local government, and the sporting events that it sponsored in the Sacramento area. For over twenty years, the Sacramento Sports Commission was instrumental in bringing approximately twenty-five professional and non-professional sporting events to the Sacramento area. Due to failure to make payments on their loans to the City and County of Sacramento, the Sacramento Sports Commission was dismantled in 2012 and its former responsibilities became a part of the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau. This collection is composed of Sacramento Sports Commission founding and business documents, and materials related to their numerous sporting events.

Administrative History

Sacramento Sports Commission (SSC), formed in 1988, was an advisory board that worked in conjunction with the local city and county governments. Sacramento Region Sports Education Foundation (SRSEF), formed in 1998, was the nonprofit aspect of the Sacramento Sports Commission. The overall goal of the Sacramento Sports Commission was to bring prominent sporting events, either professional or amateur, to the Sacramento area. The Sacramento Sports Commission sought to make Sacramento more recognizable through these events, and hoped to generate revenue for the Sacramento Sports Commission and the community. The Commission hosted twenty-five events, including: five NCAA Men's Basketball Tournaments, four NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the 1999 U.S. Gymnastic Championships, two U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track and Field, and four Tour of California events.

According to a 2011 Sacramento City Auditor report, the SRSEF did not meet the loan requirements established by the City and County of Sacramento, and did not have sufficient financial organization. The organization ran at a loss for several years, and was unable to pay back loans to the city and county for the 2011 World Masters Athletic Championship (WMA). The Sacramento Sports Commission and the SRSEF were officially dissolved in early 2013. The Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau took responsibility for sporting events and marketing in the Sacramento area in 2013.

Scope and Content of Collection

This collection documents the operation of the Sacramento Sports Commission (Sacramento Sports Commission), as well as the numerous sporting events that the Commission attracted to Sacramento. Although the collection does not contain all Sacramento Sports Commission records and is far from comprehensive, it nevertheless contains information on the Sacramento Sports Commission and its accomplishments from its establishment in 1988 until its disbandment in early 2013. Such information is contained within a variety of formats, including textual records such as: meeting minutes and agendas, financial documents, photocopied newspaper clippings, reports, and ephemera from Sacramento Sports Commission sporting events. The collection also contains photographs, audiovisual materials, and artifacts such as banners and posters.

A significant portion of the collection originally contained file folders with clearly defined contents, and both the arrangement within these folders and their assigned labels were retained as much as possible. Those files related to the operation and business of the Sacramento Sports Commission in particular lent themselves to the retention of original order at the file level. However, the collection's lack of an overall cohesive original order necessitated a certain amount of rearrangement in order to better facilitate researchers. As a result, the collection is arranged into two series: (1) records of operations, finances, and meetings, and (2) records of sporting events.

Series 1. Records of Operations, Finances, and Meetings contains materials that document the business and operation of the Sacramento Sports Commission. These records are further divided into the following sub-series, first arranged by subject and then chronologically within each subject: Founding, Operations, Associations, Community Activities, Commissioners, Budget and Funding, and Meetings. Although largely comprised of textual records, this series also contains audio cassette tapes and VHS tapes with recordings of a selection of Sacramento Sports Commission meetings, as well as other audiovisual material that promotes the Sacramento Sports Commission and the Sacramento area.

Series 2. Records of Sporting Events focuses on the athletic events that the Sacramento Sports Commission drew to the Sacramento area. The series is arranged by sport, followed chronologically by event. There are events sponsored by Sacramento Sports Commission, as well as events the Commission bid on or was interested in following. The events have varying levels of coverage, with five of the Sacramento Sports Commission's sponsored events having no records. Contents for events can include contracts, official programs, facility books, contestant biographies, volunteer information, and local media coverage. The media coverage is on a variety of media, with local coverage in print and on television. The television coverage is on DVD and VHS tapes. Some of the events also include artifacts such as banners, posters and photographs. Many of the people in photographs are unidentified.
