Purchased from Quaritch (catalogue 719, items 399 and 400), November 1953.
Edward Hawke Locker (1777-1849) was commissioner of Greenwich Hospital, a Fellow of the
Royal Society, a watercolor artist, and author of Views in Spain (1824) and Memoirs of
celebrated naval commanders (1832). His son, Frederick Locker-Lampson (1821-1895) was the
author of London lyrics and collector of the Rowfant Library. Both men enjoyed the
friendship of many prominent literary and artistic persons in England and Europe during the
Victorian era.
A collection of 395 items from 1804 to 1896; it consists primarily of the correspondence of
Edward Hawke Locker and his son, Frederick Locker-Lampson. Also included are a small number
of manuscript drafts, watercolor and pencil drawings. Subject matter includes: biographical
information for Edward Hawke Locker, Frederick Locker-Lampson and their families; Edward
Hawke Locker's writings; illustrations of Frederick Locker-Lampson's books; literary
contributions to early 19th century periodicals, especially the Quarterly Review; politics
and government including the Reform Bill of 1832 and the slavery question; world travel and
exploration including letters from Egypt, Ethiopia, the Arctic, Brazil, and India; education
of children; the formation of the Naval Gallery at Greenwich; and literary affairs.
