Abstract: The Michael G. Sotirhos correspondence files (1988-1993) consist of the personal correspondences of the U.S. Ambassador in Greece.

Scope and Contents note

The Michael G. Sotirhos correspondence files are almost exclusively the "personal" correspondence of the ambassador while he was in Greece. There are a few clippings from magazines and one letter included four photographs of paintings by Tom Kasimatis. The general tone of the letters are "Thank You for..." The Amabassador received many gifts, in fact there is one folder that contains only "thank yous" for books received. There are also many letters thanking the Ambassador and Estelle, his wife, for their hospitality. The rest of the collection is made up of various types of letters. These include letters to the ambassador from school children, personal notes saying how nice it was to see each other again, and many letters of congratulations (both to and from the ambassador).
As one would expect, there are correspondence with many well known political figures. There are several letters to and from individuals in the White House, including President and Mrs. Bush and various staff. There are also many correspondence with different members of the U.S. military. Generally these correspondence have to do with NATO commanders. The ambassador appears to have had a strong relationship with Colin Powell. There are several "notes" of a very friendly nature between the two. There are also many correspondences between the ambassador and Greek officials. There is also some correspondence with Angelo Tsakopoulos (February and July '92).
