The National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights was a grassroots effort to bring together gay and lesbian people
and their supporters from across the nation to execute a celebration and demonstration in Washington, D.C., on October 14,
1979. The march was first proposed in Autumn 1978 by an ad hoc committee in Minneapolis, but didn't gain momentum until the
assassination of Harvey Milk in November of that year.
The Los Angeles March on Washington Committee formed in 1979 to facilitate local participation in the march. In November 1979,
the Los Angeles committee would change its name to the Los Angeles Committee for the March on Sacramento, and in February
1980, to the March Committee for Gay and Lesbian Rights/Los Angeles.
Meeting minutes, flyers, pamphlets, clippings, correspondence, event programs and information, maps, calendar of events, press
releases, logistical information, notes, sheet music, questionnaires, budget records, and travel information from the National
March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights on October 14, 1979. Includes records of the Los Angeles March on Washington
Committee, March on Washington National Office in New York, March on Washington National Logistics Office in Washington, D.C.,
and to a lesser extent, the March on Washington regional offices and Third World Lesbian and Gay Conference.
