John Henry Lyman was born on May 29, 1921 in Santa Barbara, California; AB (1943), MA (1950) and Ph. D in psychology (1951),
UCLA; instructor in engineering (1950-52), asst. professor (1952-56), assoc. professor in engineering and psychology (1956-63),
and professor, UCLA; appointed head of biotechnology laboratory, 1971; managing editor of publications (1958-65), vice president
(1959) and president (1968), Human Factors Society; Fellow, American Psychology Assn.; research interests included: engineering
psychology, biotechnology, theory of self-organizing processes, perceptual and motor skills, environmental control, prosthetics,
human organization and system design and management.
