Series I:  General Administration, 1958-2003

Scope and Content Note

Records in this series document a variety of administrative functions relating the William Shipley at the University of San Diego. Among these materials are a variety of memoranda and correspondence, notes taken by Shipley during workshops and meetings with President Author Hughes. Also included are goal and planning materials for the University, materials gathered for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Accreditation Report, as well as Shipley's vitae. Shipley's vitae includes his own commentary on his achievements at USD.

Series II: Committees, 1958-1998

Scope and Content Note

William Shipley served on an array of committees during his tenure in the University of San Diego Philosophy Department. These ranged from the Academic Affairs Committee, to the Budget Committee, to the Presidential Search Committee for President Author Hughes, to the University Senate. He additionally sat in on a number of other committee's meetings. During the vast majority of these meetings, Shipley took note of the discussion and meeting proceedings. His notes, in addition to the formal meeting minutes, are included in this series.
This series is organized into five subseries. Subseries A: Academic and Administrative Committees contain the meeting minutes, meeting notes, and memoranda of the assorted committees on which Shipley served for a short time, or attended a meeting of. Among these are Academic Affairs, Academic Standards, Clerical Concerns Committee, Parking Committee and the Presidential Search Committee.
Subseries B: College of Arts and Sciences covers those committees on which Shipley served related to the College of Arts and Sciences. These included the Academic Assembly and meetings for department chairmen.
Subseries C: Curriculum Committee includes meeting minutes, notes, and memoranda from the College for Men, the Joint Curriculum Committee which formed when the College for Women and College for Men were beginning merger discussions, and from the newly established Curriculum Committee for the University of San Diego.
Subseries D: Faculty Committees includes meeting minutes, notes, and memoranda for a variety of committees pertaining to Shipley as a member of the Faculty. These include the College for Men Faculty meetings, the Joint College for Men and College for Women Faculty meetings, the Faculty Status Committee which pertained to faculty rank and tenure, and the Faculty Senate.
Subseries E: University Senate includes information regarding the formation of University Senate, discussion of what the Senate has jurisdiction over, constitution and bylaws, discussion of policies and procedures for University Senate, as well as meeting minutes, and Shipley's notes taken during meetings. Among the jurisdictional areas covered in the University Senate materials are general education requirements for undergraduate students, discussion of the quality of studies, faculty status, student welfare, university curriculum and honorary degree recipients.

Series V:  St. Francis Seminary, 1966-1971

Scope and Content Note

William Shipley served as an academic counselor for the St. Francis Seminary during the 1969-1970 academic year. This series contains records Shipley gathered during that time. Records include meeting minutes of the faculty and student groups, memoranda regarding the seminary, and requirements for the counselors. Records in this series give a glimpse into the daily schedules of St. Francis Seminary students as well as documentation of student concerns. Also included are materials for the Immaculate Heart Seminary. Whereas the St. Francis Seminary served undergraduate men seeking priesthood, the Immaculate Heart Seminary was for those men who had completed at least two years of undergraduate education and would study Theology. There was a strong correlation between the St. Francis Seminary and the Philosophy Department as St. Francis students were encouraged to major in Philosophy. Alternative majors could be sought upon approval, but 21 units Philosophy were required. Additionally, as a Philosophy Professor, Shipley was closely connected with the Seminary
