Abstract: This collection consists primarily of the correspondence between South Hite Mining Company superintendent William H. Widman
and assistant secretary J. F. Towle dating from the early 1880s. Their correspondence mainly covered stock transactions and
reports of how the company, which operated a gold mine in Mariposa County, California, was doing financially.

The South Hite Gold Mining Company owned and operated the Hites Cove gold mine
situated on the South Merced River near the Yosemite Valley in Mariposa County,
California. Gold was first discovered there in 1862 by John R. Hite. The company was
incorporated in California in 1881, but had its main offices in New York, N.Y. Over
its life span the mine produced an estimated 3 million dollars worth of gold.
This collection consists primarily of the correspondence between William H. Widman
and J. F. Towle, both of whom worked for the South Hite Mining Company. J. F. Towle,
the assistant secretary, frequently wrote to William H. Widman, the superintendent
at the Hites Cove mine. Their correspondence mainly covered stock transactions and
reports of how the company was doing financially. In addition to this there are
letters from stockholders to Widman, a few personal pieces of correspondence, and a
Photostat copy of The
Hite Mine by James Duncan Hague (1836-1908).
The collection is in one box and is arranged alphabetically by author with ephemera placed at the end.
