This subseries consists of awards and honors received by Helen Mayer Harrison, Newtown Harrison, and the Harrisons collectively. It includes material documenting Helen’s Vesta Award (1989), the Silver Apple Award for Alternating Discourse: The Works of Helen and Newton Harrison (1990), and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management’s (CIWEM) Nick Reeves Award for Arts and the Environment (2010). Scope and Contents

This series contains records documenting the years that both Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrison worked at the University of California, San Diego. Newton worked as a professor. Helen worked at UCSD’s University Extension and as a professor. The records include material from various departments including University Extension and Visual Arts, contracts and agreements, basic information on UCSD, the Harrisons’ UCSD biographies, correspondence, applications, committee information, faculty art shows, Academic Senate grants, maps, and campus planning. Of note is correspondence documenting the Harrisons’ request to split their professorship in 1979 and Helen’s 1972 letter of resignation from her position at the University Extension. Also included is the consulting agreement with Sam Naitich for Newton’s “Sky Pieces,” which became the “Artificial Aurora Borealis.” Material is arranged by type and then alphabetically.

Scope and Contents

This series contains photographic material the Harrisons did not house with specific projects, performances, exhibitions, or presentations. It includes photographs, negatives, slides, transparencies, contact sheets, panorama, and photocopies of photographs. The bulk of the photographic material is professional in nature and falls into the categories of aerial and satellite shots, animals, installations, lectures, student work, locations, maps, mining, and projects. It also contains reference images (negatives, transparencies, and photographs) used by the Harrisons to organize their work. There is a small amount of personal photographic material that belonged to the Harrisons and is housed in this series. When possible, negative numbers are written on negative sheets and the corresponding photograph envelops as a means to keep negatives and photographs linked together. The material is arranged by type and then alphabetical.
