Subseries 5. Lagoon Cycle 1972-1984

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of correspondence, proposals, research, planning, notes, designs, sketches, text, books, writings, drafts, project descriptions, maps, performances, exhibition information, financial records, press, posters, and photographic material. The Lagoon Cycle, originally one of the Survival Pieces, is a work of over 50 parts. It was partially commissioned by and is in the collection of John Kluge of Metromedia. It is a large portable mural with both images and text with two characters modeled after the Harrisons: Lagoonmaker and Witness. There are seven numbered lagoons, although the lagoons were not created in chronological order. It includes “The First Lagoon: The Lagoon at Upouveli,” “The Second Lagoon: Sea Grant,” “The Third Lagoon: The House of Crabs,” “The Fourth Lagoon: On Mixing, Mapping and Territory,” “The Fifth Lagoon: From the Salton Sea to the Pacific; From the Salton Sea to the Gulf,” “The Sixth Lagoon: On Metaphor and Discourse,” and “The Seventh Lagoon: The Ring of Fire; The Ring of Waters.” It includes information about Sea Grant, the Scripps Institute, Ted Hartley and his Desert Marine Research Institute, and Metromedia. The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 9. Gabrielino Indians 1976

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of correspondence, project descriptions, exhibition information, maps, photographic material, planning, notes, research, maps, and text. Originally “Survival Piece No. 10,” the work was commissioned by California State University, Long Beach for the exhibition Beyond the Artist’s Hand. This project studied the Gabrielino Indians’ way of life and told the story of their genocide at the hands of Spanish missionaries. The story is told in excerpts from a series of letters written by journalist Hugo Reed to the Los Angeles Star in 1850. The Harrisons retold the story with commentary in the margins. The full name of this project is “Meditation on the Gabrielino, Whose Name for Themselves is No Longer Remembered, Although We Know That They Farmed With Fire and Fought Wars By Singing.” The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 14. Sacramento Meditations 1977

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of correspondence, project descriptions, exhibition information, maps, photographic material, posters, planning, notes, research, and text. The nine texts of the Sacramento Meditations are the revised version of the work commissioned by the Floating Museum (1976) and exhibited by the San Francisco Museum of Art (1977). This project examines water use practices in California. It includes eleven posters each beginning with “For instance…if…” and ending with “What if all irrigated farming isn’t necessary?” These were posted by the Harrisons, San Francisco Art Institute students, and others on street corners throughout San Francisco, as well as billboards saying “Water”; street graffiti written with chalk on the sidewalks; video, radio and TV spots; and other performances. Another name used for this project is “Meditations on the Sacramento River, the Delta, and the Bays at San Francisco.” The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 15. Baltimore Promenade 1981

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of contact information, correspondence, project descriptions, exhibition information, maps, photographic material, planning, notes, press, proposals, publicity, research, a scrapbook, and text. This work was initiated by the Maryland Institute and supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, various city and civic agencies, and the office of the then mayor of Baltimore. The Harrisons were originally invited to comment on the problematic design of inner city housing, but once in Baltimore, they perceived the city to be divided. The Harrisons proposed reconnecting the city by creating north-south and east-west promenades that intersected at the city’s harbor. The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 17. Fortress Atlanta 1982-1983

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of correspondence, project descriptions, exhibition information, maps, photographic material, planning, notes, research, maps, and text. The Harrisons were invited to Atlanta by the Emory University Art Gallery to do a work for the gallery’s annual conference. The conference theme that year was human rights. The Harrisons took up the issue of architecture and human rights. Subseries 21. Pasadena 1969-1998

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of contracts and agreements, correspondence, project descriptions, exhibition information, meeting documentation, printed material, financial records, research, reports, photographic material, press, maps, National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant material, posters, drawings, and text documenting three projects of the Harrisons’ at the Devil’s Gate Dam in Pasadena, California: “Arroyo Seco Release: A Proposal for Pasadena” (1985), “Devil’s Gate: A Refuge for Pasadena” (1987), and “From the Air: A String of Emeralds” (1991).
“Arroyo Seco Release: A Proposal for Pasadena” was commissioned by the Baxter Art Gallery at Cal Tech and supported by the Pasadena Art Alliance and other local agencies. It was initiated by the Western Regional Association of the Garden Clubs of America. The Lower Arroyo Seco, a ten foot deep flood control channel, had destroyed the area’s ecology. The Harrisons proposed a new model to separate the process of flood control from the destruction of rivers. Before any work could be started, Devil’s Gate Dam had to be repaired.
“Devils Gate: A Refuge for Pasadena,” also called “Devil’s Gate Transformation: A Refugia for Pasadena,” addressed the repair work to be done to the dam in order to move forward with “Arroyo Seco Release.” The work was organized by a consortium of groups from Pasadena and supported by planning grants from the NEA and local groups.
“From the Air: A String of Emeralds” proposed a new stream, a new lake, a design for a new woodland riparian habitat, and a new percolation basin configuration to recharge the Raymond Basin aquafer to create a refuge for wildlife. Master planners, Bob Takata and Associates were chosen by the city to carry forward the Harrisons’ conceptual design. The Harrisons continued to work with Takata throughout the master planning phase. The end result was the Hahamongna Watershed Park.
The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

This subseries consists of draft catalogs, catalogs, contact information, correspondence, project descriptions, exhibition information, planning, notes, press, publicity, research, maps, and text documenting the Harrisons’ proposal to transform the Sava River, and the surrounding area, from its source above Ljubjana to its outfall into the Danube River at Belgrade into a nature corridor. The Harrisons were invited by Hartmut Ern of the European Nature Heritage Trust to create this nature reserve in the ecologically undisturbed area that had once been no man’s land at the border between the former Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires. The Harrisons’ work was interrupted by the start of the Croatian War of Independence in 1991. The work was accepted as the Concept of Choice by the Croatian Departments of Water and Environment (1990) and won 2nd prize at Artec ’91: The Second International Biennale in Nagoya, Japan (1991-1992). The project is also referred to as “Atempause: Breathing Space for the Sava River” and “Atempause für den Save Fluss.” The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 32. Boulder Creek 1990

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of correspondence, project descriptions, designs, maps, National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant material, photographic material, planning, notes, and text. The work, commissioned by the Art Gallery at the University of Colorado at Boulder and supported by an NEA Planning Grant, proposed to create a wetland tertiary purification system that functioned as a park and wildlife habitat while also protecting Boulder Creek from the harmful long term effects of secondary effluent from the Boulder sewage facility. It was accepted by the City of Boulder but remained unfunded. This project also is referred to as “Overground / Underground Seep: A Work for Boulder Creek” and “Overground / Underground Seep: A Wetland Walk for Boulder Creek.” The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 34. Tibet is the High Ground 1990-1991, 2005-2008

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of budgets, correspondence, project descriptions, exhibition information, photographic material, planning, notes, press, research, and text, as well as material about the Committee for Friends of the Tibetan High Ground. At the request of the Dalai Lama, the project began in the early 1990s with a conceptual design for the former forested lands of the Tibetan Plateau. The Harrisons explored the potential of putting together a team of experts to create an “analog forest” to run parallel to the Dalai Lama’s vision of a World Peace Park. The Harrisons were introduced to this project through colleague Robert (Bob) Livingston, the Dalai Lama’s science advisor and Professor of Neurosciences Emeritus, University of California, San Diego. The subseries also contains material about The Missing Peace: The Dalai Lama Portrait Project traveling exhibition (2005 to 2009). The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Language of Material: The materials in this subseries are in English, German, and Czech.

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of correspondence, planning, notes, maps, photographic material, research, and text. For this project, the Harrisons proposed to reclaim the Elbe watershed (sometimes referred to as the Labe Watershed), which stretches from the mountains of Bohemia through Germany to the outfall of the Elbe in the North Sea. The Harrisons were first invited by Milan Knizak at the Prague Academy of Art in 1990. The Harrisons researched and worked on this project while working at the Bauhaus Dessau. It is part of a larger concept for reclaiming pit mines in Bitterfeld, Germany; Northern Bohemia; and Czechoslovakia. The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 38. Bauhaus Dessau 1992-1995

Language of Material: The materials in this subseries are in English and German.

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of contracts and agreements, general information, schedule and programming information about the Bauhaus Dessau, correspondence, project descriptions, photographic material, planning, notes, research, and text. Prior to their work on the Mulde River and Bitterfeld, Germany, the Harrisons worked on a project for the Elbe watershed in Bohemia and Czechoslovakia, which is directly linked to their work at the Bauhaus Dessau.
The proposal, “Ruminations on the Open Pit Mines at Bitterfeld” (1992), was created by the Harrisons at a Bauhaus Dessau workshop coordinated by the Chamber of Architects of Hessen. The workshop asked the attendees what to do with the 24 square kilometer brown coal excavations at Bitterfeld. Attendees included Ennert Wehberg (landscape architect), Carlo Weber (architect), Lalo Nicolic (architect and President of the Chamber), Rolf Toyka (Director of Advanced Education in Architecture for the Chamber of Architects at Hessen), other architects, and students. Proceedings of the symposium, published by Prestel Press, Bitterfeld: Braunkohlebrachen – Probleme, Chancen, Visionen, won one of two 2nd place prizes (no first place prizes were given out) from the Ministry of the Ecology of Sachsen-Anhart and several Art/Natur Organizations.
The Bitterfeld work became the basis for the Harrisons’ Mulde proposal: “The Muldeaue: The First Design for an Eco-Urban Edge for the Mulde River from the Muldestausee to the Elbe” (1993). In this work, the Harrisons, proposed a redesign between the urban and natural forms of the Muldeaue.
Both of these projects, done around the same time at the Bauhaus Dessau, are part of a larger concept for reclaiming pit mines in Bitterfeld, Germany; Northern Bohemia; and Czechoslovakia.
The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

As part of the “Art and Landscape” project series, the Harrisons were invited by the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony and the Cultural Program of the Siemens Corporation to visit the “black” triangle (the borders of Poland, the Czech Republic, and Germany) to study the brown coal open pit mines and respond, as artists, to these landscapes ruined by industrial development processes. The Harrisons did their work at the Okologische station in Borna, Germany, and created a reclamation plan for Tagebau Witznitz. The full name of this project is “The Shape of Turned Earth: A Brown Coal Park for Südraum Leipzig.” The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 45. Green Heart Vision 1993-1995, 1999-2000

Language of Material: The materials in this subseries are in English, Dutch, Danish, and German.

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of catalogs, contact information, contracts and agreements, correspondence, project descriptions, designs, exhibition information, financial records, lectures, presentations, maps, meeting information, photographic material, planning, notes, press, proposals, research, schedules, and text. The Harrisons were invited by the Cultural Council of South Holland to consider the Green Heart of Holland, an area of lowland Holland slowly being reclaimed by the sea. It is a region of dikes, canals, farms, fields, and small villages surrounded by a ring of cities: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht that form the Randstad (Rim City): Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht. At the time of this project, the Green Heart was facing expanding urban areas, as well as internal development. Both of which threatened its existence. The Harrisons, using a series of images (ceramic tiles, maps, drawings, and videos) and discourse proposed a new vision for the Green Heart and the Randstad. The full name of this project is “A Vision for the Green Heart of Holland.” The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 46. Hannover 2000 1993-2000

Language of Material: The materials in this subseries are in English and German.

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of material about German publishing company Campus Verlag, contracts and agreements, correspondence, proposals, writings, drafts, planning, and notes, as well as information about Expo 2000, the World’s Fair in Hannover, Germany, from June 1, 2000 to October 31, 2000. The Harrisons referred to this project as Hannover 2000 and not Expo 2000. The Harrisons and other artists were invited to do large scale ecological and symbolic works for Expo 2000’s Art and Nature program with the intention that their work would support a series of lectures. This program was run by Thomas Sprengel of Kultur Konzept Sprengel. The Harrisons created three works to be displayed in the Munich Area at Expo 2000: “Greenhouse Europe,” “Project Europe,” and “Three Cut Meadow.” “Project Europe” is an early incarnation of “Peninsula Europe” and “Three Cut Meadow” directly relates to “Future Garden.” As part of their participation in the Art and Nature program, the Harrisons wrote Grüne Landschaften Vision: Die Welt als Garten, published by Campus Verlag as part of the Expo 2000 book series. There is a draft of this publication in this subseries. This subseries also houses numerous drafts of “Peninsula Europe as a Twenty-First Century Garden: Bringing Forth a New Space of Mind” commissioned by Schweisfurth Foundation. The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 50. Karl-Marx-Allee 1994-1995

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of project descriptions, photographic material, planning, notes, press, research, schedules, and text. The Harrisons were invited by the Chamber of Architects of Hessen and the architects of Berlin to be on one of six teams at a charrette to propose the redevelopment of the Karl-Marx-Allee in Berlin, Germany. The Harrisons proposed taking the large public spaces and transforming them into new urban green spaces based on ecological and not horticultural principles. The full title of this work “On Seeing Karl-Marx-Allee as Centering a Unique Neighborhood within the First Urban Forest.” The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 51. California Wash 1989-1997

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of contact information, contracts and agreements, correspondence, project descriptions, designs, drawings, blueprints, financial records, meeting information, photographic material, planning, notes, architectural surveys, press, vendor information, proposals, schedules, and text. At the request of the Director of the Santa Monica Arts Commission, the Harrisons entered an international competition for the terminus of Pico Boulevard where it meets the Santa Monica Beach Promenade. The Harrisons won the competition, and, in association with Spurlock-Porrier (landscape architects), began work on phase one. There were many more phases, and the work was completed in 1996. “California Wash” is a reflection of the path rain water took from the mountains to the coast before city development. The rain water washed down from the Hollywood Hills and carried earth, rocks, seeds, and plants that created the natural landscape as the water washed out to sea. After city development and an installation of a storm drain, the rain water no longer followed its natural path. Using a serpentine path and native plants, the Harrisons evoked the natural state of this area. The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 55. Peninsula Europe 1999-2007

Language of Material: The materials in this subseries are in English and German. Some material in French, Hebrew, and Dutch.

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of contact information, contracts and agreements, correspondence, exhibition information, financial records, drawings, project descriptions, press, publicity, meeting information, planning, notes, catalogs, maps, proposals, photographic material, research, schedules, and text, as well as a film sketch done with Bruce Erickson titled “The Heartland Watersheds of Peninsula Europe,” which is derived from the Harrisons’ book, Grüne Landschaften Vision: Die Welt als Garten, published by Campus Verlag as part of the Expo 2000 book series. Funded by Culture 2000 of the European Union, Deutsche Bundes Umwelt Stiftung (the education branch of the Nature Protection Agency of the German Government), Schweisfurth Foundation of Munich, and BUGA 2001 at Potsdam, this project has been exhibited extensively. Peninsula Europe argued that a unique pattern emerged from the European landscape when geophysical Europe is viewed as a peninsula, surrounded by water on three sides with its eastern boundary formed by the Vistula and Dnestr Rivers as they descend from the Carpathians to the wetlands of the Russian plain. The Harrisons organized much of their Peninsula Europe material based on geographic location, which has been maintained as much as possible. The locations are: Aachen, Germany; Berlin, Germany; Brussels, Belgium; Denmark; France; Holland; Norway; Potsdam, Germany; and Prague, Czech Republic. The project is also titled “Peninsula Europe: The High Grounds.” The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 57. Matese Project 2002-2005

Language of Material: The materials in this subseries are in English and Italian.

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of contracts and agreements, correspondence, project descriptions, designs, exhibition information, financial records, maps, photographic material, research, text, and travel information. It includes two Italian projects worked on by the Harrisons: Matese and Salerno. The Harrisons kept these two projects housed together in their files.
In 2002, the Harrisons participated in a competition in Salerno where they designed a park and an ecological walk. Their proposal was not selected, but, while in Salerno, they met architect Claudio Calabritto. In 2005, Calabritto invited the Harrisons to join an EU grant for the Apennines in Matese Park, also known as "Villaggio dell’Arte" and "Paesesaggio Project." This project sought to revitalize some of the villages in the Matese Park Area. The subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 58. Santa Fe 1994-1995, 2002-2008

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of contact information, contracts and agreements, correspondence, project descriptions, exhibition information, financial records, lecture and workshop information, maps, photographic material, planning, notes, press, proposals, research, schedules, and text. The Harrisons went to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2002 to give a lecture as part of the Terra Firma program at the Santa Fe Art Institute (SFAI). Afterwards, they conducted a workshop on ecological art focusing on water, politics, resources, and the land, as well as Latino, Anglo, and Native American issues. Out of this came a larger project that resulted in the exhibition On the Santa Fe Watershed: Lessons from the Genius of Place. For this exhibition, the Harrisons worked with the SFAI on a grand scheme for the drain basin of the Santa Fe River. The subseries is arranged alphabetically.
