These papers reflect the writings and research interests of Felix Gilbert, a historian, writer, and professor in emigration and consist of correspondence, speeches and writings, notes, research material, and conference papers, relating to historiography, and to various aspects of the political, cultural, intellectual, diplomatic and military history of Europe, and especially of Italy and Germany, from the Renaissance to the twentieth century.

Felix Gilbert (1905 – 1991) was a German-born American historian, educator, and author who wrote on Renaissance Italy, 18th-century North America and Europe of the last century of early modern and modern Europe.
Gilbert studied under Friedrich Meinecke at the University of Berlin and was a fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University. His area of expertise was the Renaissance, especially the diplomatic history of the period. Dr. Gilbert wrote, edited, or co-edited more than a dozen scholarly books. He was a visiting professor at leading American universities and was awarded many honorary doctorates. One of Gilbert's books, To the Farewell Address: Ideas of Early American Foreign Policy, received a Bancroft Prize in 1962.
The main reading room of the German Historical Institute in Washington, D.C. is named in his honor.
