Biographical / historical:

The San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park was conceived as part of the San Francisco Museum of Science and Industry in the 1940's with displays in various locations in the City of San Francisco, including at the Aquatic Park Bathhouse.

The San Francisco Maritime Museum was formed in 1951 by the San Francisco Maritime Museum Association lead by Karl Kortum. Their holdings included BALCLUTHA and EPPLETON HALL. Concurrently the San Francisco Maritime State Historical Park was established in 1956. The State never took over the holdings of the Museum Association, but operated Hyde Street Pier and the Haslett Warehouse. Vessels included C.A. THAYER, WAPAMA, EUREKA, ALMA and HERCULES. In 1977 the State Park was taken over by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) and became the National Maritime Museum. The title, while never popular and used sparingly, was written into the legislation authorizing the Federal takeover of the Park. The vessels were operated by the Facilities Unit of GGNRA. In about 1983, the ships and the museum functions of the Association were consolidated as the Maritime Unit of GGNRA. This arrangement continued until 1988 when a separate park, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park was established by Act of Congress.
