Abstract: This diary records a trip taken by Charles Miller and DC Brownell from April 17, 1876 to July 17 of the same year. It began with a steamer trip to San Diego, with stops in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. then overland by stage to Tuscon, AZ. They spent about 2 months exploring the area around Tuscon by horseback and then rode the horses to Trinidad, CO on June 15. There they boarded a train which took them to Denver, St Louis, Chicago, Detroit, Niagara Falls, and Albany. There they boarded at steamer on the Hudson River to New York City. From there they travelled to Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, Cincinati, and St Louis. From there they took the train to San Francisco, arriving on July 17th. This is an excellent narrative and description of events, sights, and places on this whirlwind transcontinental journey. It is extensively illustrated with pictures, drawings and photographs. 30 pages of the diary are devoted the the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876
