Background
In 1918, Mary E. McLellan joined the California Academy of Sciences as a library assistant. She remained in this area until
her appointment as Assistant Curator, Department of Birds and Mammals (1922-1936). While at the Academy, she collected over
600 specimens including hawks, ducks, herons, finches, rails, shorebirds, and many others. She is listed as preparatory on
a number of these. Her travels included Tahiti (1920), Samoa (1921), Mexico (1925), and Panama (1929-1932).
