Camping and plant collecting trips circa 1945

Physical Description: 1 film 8 mm

Scope and Contents

This film captures several different montages by Weier: a camping trip on the California coast, hydraulic mining in Weaverville, and a plant collecting trip.
The signboards, describing the film's various scenes, have been transcribed here:
[Camping]: The Pickwick [their dog] is finally gotten aboard [the car] for the spring trip up the coast, 1942. We make camp on the banks of the Gualala River. The Pickwick is up to his favorite sport -- fishing. [Hydraulic mining]: At Weaverville we at last find real hydraulic mining. The gold bearing ore is at the base of the bank. It is washed out by the powerful stream of water. The gold bearing gravel is forced up to the base of a sheet iron barrier by the stream of the water. The riffles are at the base of this barrier. The gold is caught by mercury as it drops between the rifles. The miner keeps the stream free of silt so that water and the silt it carries will move away. [Collecting trip]: It would seem that the main activity on this trip was putting on taking off the rucksack. It was. The azaleas were in their full glory. Stowing away our treasures and washing away any contact with poison oak. We hope.
The film canister was labeled "Georgetown and Coast."
