Abstract: Reports and administrative files from the Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA), subject and research files, and personal
papers (bulk, 1970-2000) from Attorney B.W. Grant Barnes. The collection includes extensive subject files pertaining to Barnes'
research in international human rights laws; records documenting his work in the Individual Rights Section of the LACBA; and
his personal writings, correspondence and other material documenting his involvement in numerous gay and lesbian organizations.
Language of Material: Languages represented in the collection: English and German.
Biography
B.W. Grant Barnes was born in Stephenville, Texas. He graduated high school in 1966, then attended the University of Texas
for his bachelor's degree. He graduated in 1972, with High Honors in Sociology, Comparative Literature, Philosophy, and Architecture.
After living in Berlin in the mid-1970s while teaching English, he moved back to the United States and graduated Harvard Law
School in 1982.
His legal experience includes international counseling and litigation practice (including providing counsel to Swedish and
German law firms and assisting local firms in California in state and federal litigation and business due diligence), international
law, international civil aviation, securities regulation and mortgage acquisition litigation, insurance coverage, labor litigation
and counseling (including performance/recording contracts), construction claims, government contract law, and general business
negotiable law.
Barnes was involved in gay rights activism, including research in international human rights violations and LGBT legal issues
in the United States. He also advocated for LGBT immigration rights, same-gender marriage and AIDS awareness and support.
He was a member of LGBT groups including AIDS Project Los Angeles, Asian/Pacific Lesbians & Gays, Gay Bruins, Lawyers for
Human Rights and Lambda Lawyers. He also participated on the rowing team in the Gay Games of 1994 in Amsterdam.
As of 2013, Barnes continues to live in Los Angeles, California.

Scope and Contents
The collection comprises reports and administrative files from the Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA), subject and
research files, and personal papers (bulk, 1970-2000) from Attorney B.W. Grant Barnes. The LACBA and Gay and Lesbian Legal
Issues Series includes records documenting his work in the Individual Rights Section of the LACBA, as well as material documenting
gay and lesbian legislation and legal cases, particularly in California and Hawaii. The Subject Files Series comprises extensive
files of clippings and articles pertaining to Barnes' research in international human rights laws. The Personal Papers Series
includes Barnes' personal writings, correspondence and other material documenting his involvement in numerous gay and lesbian
organizations. In particular, this series includes material from LGBT lawyers organizations, the rowing team from the 1994
Gay Games, sound recordings from the OutWrite conference for gay and lesbian writers, and Barnes' writings, including fiction,
non-fiction and poetry.

Potential Deaccession
Series 2: Subject Files is made up mostly of subject file material regarding general human rights and civil rights issues
around the world, with seemingly little to no discussion about LGBTQ issues. Perhaps the only files in this series to retain
would be the "Gender issues" folders regarding men and women's roles, and homosexuality.

Series Description
This series includes meeting minutes, correspondence, memoranda, reports, newsletters, financial records, and resource material
documenting Barnes' work in the Individual Rights Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA). The Individual
Rights Section concentrates on legal issues that affect individual liberty, including those involving LGBT and AIDS patients'
rights. This series also includes government-issued reports, clippings, legal briefs and other material documenting LGBT
legal issues.

Administrative files from the Individual Rights Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association are at the beginning of
this series and arranged chronologically. The remaining folders are arranged alphabetically.
