Abstract: Mario Jose de Souza Machado, a
Portuguese-Chinese descendant, was born in Shanghai, China on April 22, 1935. He was an
eight-time Emmy Award-winning television and radio broadcaster, and was also heavily
involved in local community and Old China Hands events. He helped organize the 1996 Old
China Hands Reunion in Las Vegas, Nevada, and invited special guest speakers from various
governments, media, and business. The collection consists mostly of documents regarding the
1996 reunion, in addition to some personal photographs, ephemera, awards, and documents
related to Machado's life and career.

Biographical Information:
Mario Jose de Souza Machado, a Portuguese-Chinese descendant, was born in Shanghai, China
on April 22, 1935. His father, Carlos Jacinto de Lourdes Gouveia Furtado Machado, served as
a vice-chancellor for the Portuguese Consulate of Shanghai.
Machado attended the British Thomas Hanbury School, St. Francis Xavier College of
Shanghai, a business college in Hong Kong, and St. John's Military Academy in Los Angeles.
He arrived in Seattle in 1956, and became a U.S. citizen in 1965.
Machado was active in film, television, sports casting, and radio. He helped organize the
1996 Old China Hands Reunion in Las Vegas, Nevada, and invited special guest speakers from
various governments, media, and business. Additionally, he wrote newsletters for the Old
China Hands community regarding future events.
Scope and Contents
The
Mario J. Machado Collection consists mostly of documents
regarding the 1996 Old China Hands Reunion, in addition to some personal photographs,
ephemera, awards, and documents related to Machado's life and career. The collection is
divided into two series:
Old China Hands Reunion (1994-2001), and
Personal Materials (1936-2004).
Series I,
Old China Hands Reunion,consists of four subseries.
Subseries A,
Correspondence (1994-2000), consists of letters and
faxes between Machado and various people planning the 1996 reunion. Subseries B,
Planning Documents and Information
(1994-2001), consists of documents produced while planning the reunion,
including drafts, notes, drawings, receipts, mailing lists, registration and order forms,
and newsletters. Subseries C,
Photographs (1996), consists of
photographs taken during the reunion, and photographs used during an exhibit on Old Shanghai
displayed during the event. Subseries D,
Audiovisual Materials
(1996), consists of VHS and U-matic tapes recorded during the reunion.
Series II,
Personal Materials,consists of two subseries.
Subseries A,
China and Professional Materials (1936-2004),
consists of documents and ephemera related to Machado's life in Shanghai and his later
career in broadcasting, including school yearbooks, awards, patches and items from Shanghai,
and photographs. Subseries B,
Research Materials (1953-1996),
consists of information collected by Machado on topics related to the experiences of Old
China Hands, including information on Portugal, immigration issues, POWs during World War
II, and various other bulletins and newsletters.
