Scope and Contents
This collection consists of a ledger, kept in manuscript, which records disbursements for
food (fresh beef, oats, milk, chicken, etc.), stationery, labor, medicines, hardware, and
"sundries" for The United States Soldiers' Homes (referred to on the spine of this ledger as
"U.S. Military Asylums"), at New Orleans Barracks in Louisiana, in East Pascagoula,
Mississippi, and in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, from May, 1851, through September, 1858. The
ledger was kept by Assistant Surgeon Charles McCormick at New Orleans; Brevet Major Earl Van
Dorn (1820-1863), the great-nephew of Andrew Jackson, at Pascagoula ; and Brevet Captain
L.B. Wood, 8th Infantry, at Harrodsburg.
