    Biographical / Historical

    Shingo Umene was born on May 7, 1925 in Oakland, California. Umene joined the army on June 1, 1944 at the age of 19 in Fort Logan, Colorado. During World War Two, Umene served as a squad leader for a rifle company in charge of a mortar squad as part of Company A, 100th Infantry Battalion/442nd Regimental Combat Team. He received several decorations, including the World War Two Victory Medal, the European–African–Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, two Overseas Service Bars, the Army of Occupation Medal Germany, and the Good Conduct Medal. Umene was honorably discharged from the army on July 31, 1946 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Umene passed away on July 6, 1993 in Richmond, California at the age of 68.
