    Abstract: The Richardson family owned large land holdings north of Chico on which they raised cattle. The resort of Richardson Springs was developed on a part of this property. This collection consists of deeds, mortgages, title abstracts, agreements, a share certificate for the Mammoth Channel Gold Mining Company (1907), a bill of sale for personal property (1919), and correspondence.

    Biography/Administrative History

    The Richardson family consisted of brothers: William, Cyrus, Jared, Alonzo, Pierce, Joseph, Elisha, Orlando and sisters: Elizabeth, and Caroline. The first Richardson to arrive in California was Pierce who came in 1860. He was followed in 1866 and 1869 by Jared and Alonzo respectively. Eventually Joseph and Orlando, along with their sisters and their parents, joined them at the Mud Creek Ranch, north of Chico. The family gained prominence through real estate development, cattle ranching and the development of the resort of Richardson Springs.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    The collection contains records of the large land holdings of the Richardson family. The records include: deeds, mortgages, title abstracts, usage agreements, and a share certificate for the Mammoth Channel Mining Company from 1907. The collection also contains a bill of sale for Richardson family personal property in 1919. As the brothers came to California they corresponded with family in Iowa and Indiana. Family correspondence dates from 1822-1909.
