Description
The Inyo Canal Company Records consist of receipts, financial records, correspondence, and stock agreements related to water rights and associated land transactions and stock agreements in Inyo County, California. The Nevada-based company was organized to transport Owens River water for irrigation and other purposes. The correspondence is primarily addressed to Trenmor Coffin. Some letters document on-site work supervised by F. McIver. Payroll records note the names of specific individuals, except for the individual hired to cook. The hired cook is referred to only as "China Cook," reflecting discrimination against individuals of Chinese descent during the Chinese Exclusion Act period. Several receipts document transactions in Lone Pine and Independence, California. Stock sales agreements between the Inyo Land Company and William J. Sutherland of London, England, and Henry A. Herbert of Muckross, Ireland document foreign investment interest in land and water in the American West in the late 19th century. The records are arranged in folders by record type, and then chronologically.
