Collection Descrption
This collection consists of correspondence, a certificate, and medals and ribbons related to the Civil War and the post-war
era. The correspondence consists of a letter from one Addison C. Walker to Riana Stowell in 1861 describing his life in the
23rd New York Infantry Regiment, a volunteer regiment. IWalker write of a military foray against the Confederates, and regimental
rations and living conditions. In addition there is is a certificate from the State of New York verifying his enrollment in
that regiment. A check of the
roster of the 23rd digitized by the New York State Archives, and accessible through the New York State Military Musuem, reveals that Addicson
C. Walker enlisted at the age of 18 in 1861 and was mustered out in 1863 when the regiment was disbanded.
Besides these items, there are a number of ribbons and medal related to the Woman's Relief Corps (W.R.C.) and the Grand Army
of the Republic (G.A.R.). The W.R.C., founded in 1883, was a woman's auxiliary organization that supported the Grand Army
of the Republic, a national veterans' organization of Union soldiers and sailors. The medals and ribbons come from organizations
in such towns as Des Moines, Tama, and Marshalltown, all located in Iowa, suggesting that the original owners were from that
state. This is the best that can be determined about the creators of this collection. The medals and ribbons have been stored
in small boxes and then stored in a larger, flat oversize archival document bos.
Arrangement
With no original order discernible, this small collection is arranged by item, eg, Des Moines Woman's Relief Corps ribbon,
and described at that level.
