Abstract: Leatherette photographic album with 10 leaves, 91 mounted and 3 loose photographs. The photos, collected by Jose Montoya,
document children in the Barrio Arte Program creating art.
The Barrio Arte Program is a community art program that takes place in the Washington Neighborhood Center in Sacramento, Calif.
Although the Washington Neighborhood Center has been around since 1952, the barrio arte program itself was established in
the early 1970s as part of California State University, Sacramento's (CSUS) credential program.
Jose Montoya, a CSUS art professor, designed the program as a means for students to gain community outreach and teaching experience.
The program focuses on Mexican American / Chicano art and projects aimed towards youths.
Inside cover reads: 25 years of art education in the community "Confidence before Competence", photographs of children creating
art.
