Scope and Contents

This collection contains three letters from Noel Adams, United States Merchant Marines to his wife [name unknown] shortly after the Second World War. The correspondence was written aboard the all-purpose cargo ship SS Golden Racer and describes the islands of Tinian and Iwo Jima, as well as their climates and war torn environments.
Of particular interest is Noel's description of the treatment of Japanese war prisoners and local Korean and Okinawan civilians, serving as longshoremen.
Also of interest, Noel makes mention of the name Oppenheimer, which is believed to refer to J. Robert Oppenheimer, father of the Atomic Bomb.
