Series 1. SUNSET LIMITED

Scope and Contents

This series contains all of the materials related to Dr. Richard Orsi's book, SUNSET LIMITED and is separated into three subseries. Some materials did not fit into the established subseries, as noted in the box listing. Located within are a copy of the 2005 edition of SUNSET LIMITED, initial outlines for the chapters and bibliography, an announcement of the book's writing, and an advertisement for a presentation of the finished work at the California State Railroad Museum.
Subseries one contains the drafts of chapters 2, 12, 13, 14, as well as the introduction and the bibliography for SUNSET LIMITED. There are also four small card boxes containing notecards for chapters 2, 6, and 7, and notes for the 2005 revised edition of SUNSET LIMITED.
Subseries two contains the photographs and illustrations used by Dr. Orsi for SUNSET LIMITED. In this subseries there are primarily photographs for chapters 1 through 14, however there are also photograph requisition forms sent by Dr. Orsi to various institutions. Finally there is a copy of the cover illustration, as well as photographs from several archives and libraries that do not appear to have been used in SUNSET LIMITED.
Subseries three contains the documents used as research material for SUNSET LIMITED. They are divided into two main categories: research material and supporting documents, both of which are arranged by chapter. The bulk of the material deals with the railroad's environmental impact, although there are also a sizable amount of documents on the Union Pacific's merger with the Central Pacific, and correspondence with C.P. Huntington.

Series 3. Subjects

Scope and Contents

Series 3 of the Dr. Richard J. Orsi Collection contains research materials, articles, and sources that Dr. Orsi had used for projects or papers not connected to either SUNSET LIMITED or ELUSIVE EDEN. The material is divided into 6 subseries based on subject, the largest of which are those pertaining to the environmental impact of the railroad, Southern Pacific, and the Mussel Slough tragedy respectively. The smaller subseries contain materials on the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1918-1919, police and the railroad, and finally miscellaneous topics that do not fit into any of the aforementioned categories.
Subseries one covers the railroad's environmental impact throughout its history in California, and contains reports on land usage from the Southern Pacific Railroad, maps, reports, and planning documents for the Yosemite valley, and several reports concerning the imperial water district. Additionally, the subseries contains numerous newspaper clippings concerning various events concerning the railroad and urban development that Dr. Orsi had written on for his own note taking purposes.
The second subseries contains materials directly related to the operation and business practices of the Southern Pacific Railroad. There are several documents detailing the proposed merger and un-merger between the Southern Pacific and the Central Pacific, labor reports, documents from the San Francisco office, and finally a collection of photographs and requisition forms to several California archives.
The subseries concerning Mussel Slough is predominantly made up of secondary sources that covered the tragedy and its aftermath. Additionally there is a collection of GLO papers in the Mussel Slough subseries.
The remaining two smaller subseries all contain secondary sources on their subjects, whether it be the Spanish flu, or the relationship between the railroads and law enforcement agencies. The final subseries is designated for materials that did not fit into any of the aforementioned subseries.

Series 4. Articles, Lectures, and Projects

Scope and Contents

The fourth series of the Dr. Richard J. Orsi Collection contains a multitude of articles, lectures, presentations, and projects completed by Dr. Orsi that do not directly relate to the writing of either SUNSET LIMITED or ELUSIVE EDEN, although it should be noted that located within are lectures on SUNSET LIMITED which Dr. Orsi delivered to various institutions. The series is divided into 7 subseries based on subject matter.
The lecture material in this series mainly focuses on the Mussel Slough tragedy, the Southern Pacific Company, and the effect of the railroad on the environment. With the lectures are several boxes of Kodak brand slides that were meant to be used as a supplement to them.
Also in the collection are several folders worth of material on the nomination of Railtown in Sacramento as a National Historic Landmark, as well as the California State Railroad Museum exhibit, ROAD OF 1000 WONDERS, which Dr. Orsi contributed to and worked on with the museum staff.
Finally, there are several drafts of an article written by Dr. Orsi titled HEAR THAT LONESOME WHISTLE BLOW, along with several CDs of illustrations and lecture notes on the subject of the article.
