Abstract: Miss Coco López was a drag artist who performed in shows throughout the United States, including in San Francisco, New York, Miami, and Boston. López was originally created in 1993 by Ray Pifferrer in Massachusetts as Miss Ginger Extravaganza. Pifferrer changed names to Miss Coco López in 1995. López was an unabashedly exaggerated Cuban drag character. As Pifferrer noted, “She was based on two of my aunts (tia Angela y tia Modesta), as well as my outrageously gay Dad.” The collection includes costumes and wigs, audiovisual recordings, props and promotional materials, scripts, and publications and zines including Outlook, Outweek, My Comrade, CelebrAsian, Black/Out: The Magazine of the National Coalition for Black Lesbians and Gays, Thing, and Pansy Beat. This collection is part of the Calle 16 and Beyond Archives Project of the GLBT Historical Society.
