The collection was processed by Carlota Ramirez, Student Processing Assistant, in 2017.
Processing of the William Berwald papers was completed by undergraduate students from the University of California, Riverside as part of the Special Collections & University Archives Backlog Processing Project started in 2015. This project was funded by the UCR Library and administered by Jessica Geiser, Collections Management Librarian.

Biographical Note

Born in Germany in 1864, William Berwald became the head of the Department of Music Theory at Syracuse University in New York, where he taught for 52 years. He published over 400 compositions, ranging from orchestral works to pedagogical pieces for piano, and was the winner of numerous prizes including the Clemson Gold Medal in 1913, the Prosser Etude prize in 1915, and the Estey Organ Prize in 1928. He also served as the conductor of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra from 1922 to 1925.

Collection Scope and Contents

The collection contains materials related to composer William Berwald, including photocopies of several of his compositions, performance programs, articles, and a copy of a manuscript remembrance of Berwald written by his daughter.
Compositions found in the collection include: Dramatic Overtude, Hawaiian Isles, From Old Japan, Eros and Psyche, Dreams, Voice of Fate, The Way of the Cross, and Symphonic Prelude. A few of the compositions in the collection are poorly photocopied and may prove difficult to read.
