Tomio “Tom” Gohata was born on November 4, 1911 in Los Angeles, California. As a Japanese American living on the Western Coast of the United States, Gohata and his family were forcibly removed from their home as a consequence of Executive Order 9066 and sent to Manzanar Concentration Camp. Gohata eventually went on to serve in the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team in I Company as a rifleman during World War II. He was discharged from the military in July 1946. After his discharge, Gohata settled in Gardena and opened up a nursery.
