Boland was a Cal Poly Pomona professor from 1957 to 1978. She was one of the first female
faculty members at Cal Poly Pomona and also served as the acting dean for the School of
Arts. Her collection contains memos from Cal Poly President Robert Kramer and other faculty
members, an agenda of an economics committee meeting, clippings about Boland and other
topics, and a resolution naming Boland a "Professor Emeritus."

Biographical / Historical
Dr. Gertrude C. Boland was born in Buffalo, New York on July 26, 1914. She attended Mount
St. Mary's College in Los Angeles, where she earned a bachelor's degree in art. She later
earned a bachelor's degree in foreign services from Georgetown in Washington, D.C. and a
master's degree in economics from the Catholic University of America, also in Washington
D.C.
In 1957, Boland was one of the first three women hired as faculty at Cal Poly Pomona. In
addition to economics, Boland taught American history and philosophy. In 1961, Boland earned
a PhD in economics and government from the Claremont Graduate School in Claremont,
California. Her doctoral dissertation focused on India's role in the United Nations. Nine
years later, Boland earned a second PhD. The degree, awarded by St. Louis University in St.
Louis, Missouri, was in clinical psychology.
Boland served as acting chair of the economics department in 1970 and served as the
department's chair from 1971 to 1975. In 1975, Boland became the first female academic dean
at Cal Poly Pomona when she was named acting dean of the School of Arts, replacing Albert
Aschenbrenner. She served in the position until 1977. A year later, she retired and was
granted the title of "Professor Emeritus."
During her time at Cal Poly Pomona, Boland served on a number of committees, including the
Economics Committee, the Differential Admissions Standards Committee, and the Committee for
the Admission of Female Students.
Boland died in Glendora, California on September 20, 1999. She was 85 years old.

The collection contains memos from Cal Poly Pomona President Robert Kramer and other
faculty members; an agenda of an economics committee meeting; a report requesting to
establish a master's of art degree in English; news clippings about Boland; clippings about
campus events and Cal Poly Pomona professor Dr. Werner Marti; a resolution naming Boland as
"Professor Emeritus"; and an issue of the
Student Opinion Bulletin, a booklet
made by Cal Poly Pomona students that rated professors on the campus.
The memos address various topics including the Faculty Senate's censure of University
President Robert Kramer, the inauguration of University President Hugh La Bounty, and a
limitation on enrollment in the Social Sciences Department.
