Dr. Gertrude C. Boland was born in Buffalo, New York on July 26, 1914. She attended Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles, where she earned a bachelor's degree in art. She later earned a bachelor's degree in foreign services from Georgetown in Washington, D.C. and a master's degree in economics from the Catholic University of America, also in Washington D.C.
In 1957, Boland was one of the first three women hired as faculty at Cal Poly Pomona. In addition to economics, Boland taught American history and philosophy. In 1961, Boland earned a PhD in economics and government from the Claremont Graduate School in Claremont, California. Her doctoral dissertation focused on India's role in the United Nations. Nine years later, Boland earned a second PhD. The degree, awarded by St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri, was in clinical psychology.
Boland served as acting chair of the economics department in 1970 and served as the department's chair from 1971 to 1975. In 1975, Boland became the first female academic dean at Cal Poly Pomona when she was named acting dean of the School of Arts, replacing Albert Aschenbrenner. She served in the position until 1977. A year later, she retired and was granted the title of "Professor Emeritus."
During her time at Cal Poly Pomona, Boland served on a number of committees, including the Economics Committee, the Differential Admissions Standards Committee, and the Committee for the Admission of Female Students.
