Women's Athletic Association
The Women's Athletic Association (WAA) was formed in 1901 as an extracurricular sports organization for women. The organization
included sports such as badminton, basketball, bowling, crew, crop and saddle, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse,
riflery, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, and volleyball. The Intermural Program and the Interclass Program (renamed
in the 1960s as the Extramural Program) each had its own student officers, as did the WAA Council. Originally named "Sports
and Pastimes," the name was changed to the Women's Athletic Association of the University of California in 1926. In 1974,
the name was changed to Women's Intercollegiate Sports.
