Scope and Content
Deposit form 4408. Dated: 8/19/85. Also contains names of bondholders' trustees. Deposit form for bonds purchased from the
Confederate States of America, issued in 1885. This document summarized CSA bonds deposited with the National Safe Deposit
Company, Limited of England.
The purpose of the British Bondholder Committee was to pool all of the outstanding Confederate bonds purchased by England
with an attempt to collect on them. Bondholders would deposit their bonds into an account and were given a scrip certificate
in exchange. Payment was never made on the bonds since the Confederacy no longer existed after the war and the U.S. would
not honor the payment.
