Biographical / Historical

Harriet Marie Moore (1/1/1814 - 8/24/1913) was born in Veteran, New York and died at her home near Shell Rock, Iowa at the age of 99. At 12 years old she moved with her sister, Mrs. R. II. Avilbur, to LaSalle, Illinois where she grew to young womanhood. She married Charles Herrington on January 18, 1860 in Boone County, Illinois where they lived until 1883. They then moved to their farm three miles north of Shell Rock. They had five children; Joseph Edward of Long Beach, Cal., and Charlie J., Fred Webster, Sabnn D., and L. Maud of Shell Rock. Charles died on October 17, 1899 and Harriett remained on the farm working and caring for herself and children. She joined the Methodist church in Shell Rock and was a faithful member as long as she lived.

Content Description

This collection contains four letters from various authors written to the Herrington family during and after the Civil War. The dates of the letters range from 1863 to 1868. The first three letters were written to Harriet Herrington and the fourth letter was written to Harriet's husband, Charles Herrington.
The first letter, dated May 1863, has a poem titled "Company K" printed on the first page of the letter. This letter was written by Harriet Herrington's cousin, Frank Gimar.
Harriet Herrington's sibling, E.B. Moore, wrote the second and third letters. Moore talks about the seasons and farming.
The fourth letter is written by Charles' cousin, Hiram. In Hiram's letter, he provides a little advice to Charles, who is newly married. He talks about his feelings about the war and a report that said the federal flag was now flying over the Confederate capital and how he hoped the report was true.
