Description
This collection contains four letters from different authors written to the Herrington family during and after the Civil War.
Background
Harriet Marie Moore (1/1/1814 - 8/24/1913) was born in Veteran, New York and died at her home near Shell Rock, Iowa at the age of 99. At 12 years old she moved with her sister, Mrs. R. II. Avilbur, to LaSalle, Illinois where she grew to young womanhood. She married Charles Herrington on January 18, 1860 in Boone County, Illinois where they lived until 1883. They then moved to their farm three miles north of Shell Rock. They had five children; Joseph Edward of Long Beach, Cal., and Charlie J., Fred Webster, Sabnn D., and L. Maud of Shell Rock. Charles died on October 17, 1899 and Harriett remained on the farm working and caring for herself and children. She joined the Methodist church in Shell Rock and was a faithful member as long as she lived.
