Biography/Administrative History
Mr. Koch was born in Jackson, California, and went to work in the late 1890s at the age of 14 for the Southern Pacific Railroad
as a helper on SP fire trains. He had advanced to the position of locomotive engineer by 1903-1904. Between 1903 and 1906
he worked for the SP, living at SP's Summit station, west of Truckee.
