    Scope and Content of Collection

Photographs taken by J.D. Wade during the late 1960s and early 1970s. This set of black and white prints and original negatives document the States Line Steamship Company picket during the late spring of 1969. In late March, States Line fired a young man named Gale Whittington simply because he was gay. This act spawned one of the first gay liberation organizations in San Francisco, the Committee for Homosexual Freedom, which began picketing the States Lines office on California Street. The photographs and negatives in this set document that picket line, as well as the reactions of some of the startled passers-by. Additionally, this collection contains black and white photographs of stage performers from 1970.
