Abstract: Thesa Jolly was an American volunteer of the Peace Corps in Korea from July 1972-1974. Her father, Donald Jolly, was a Lieutenant
in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. This small collection comprises primarily correspondence, clippings,
brochures, guides, memos, and articles relating both personally and professionally to Thesa and Donald Jolly. The collection
also includes various forms of ephemera, photos, slides, and a few books.
Biographical Note
Thesa Jolly was born circa 1950 to Donald and Jean Jolly and is the younger of two daughters. After completing college, Thesa
joined the Peace Corps in Korea, serving for two years between the summers of 1972 and 1974.
Her father, Donald Jolly, was born in Los Angeles, California on April 19, 1922. He attended Chapman College and studied for
the ministry at Pittsburgh-Xenia seminary, graduating in 1945. From 1945 to 1947, he was the assistant minister at Salinas
United Presbyterian Church. In 1947 he joined the Navy Chaplaincy, serving a number of stations including El Toro Marine Corps,
USS Renville, and Navy Communication Station. From July 1951 to February 1952, Jolly served with the Fifth Marines and the
First Combat Service group in Korea during the Korean War. He received a Letter of Commendation for his service. Thereafter,
he was stationed with the 12th Marines, Third Marine Division in Camp Joseph H. Pendleton, California.
Scope and Contents
The Thesa Jolly family papers (1951-2016, bulk 1970-1974), consist of correspondence, articles, clippings, postcards, brochures,
slides, photos, books, and ephemera created and collected by Thesa Jolly and relating predominantly to her time in the Peace
Corps in Korea and also well to her father, Marine Corps Lieutenant Donald Jolly. The majority of the material is comprised
of correspondence in the form of written letters and cards, largely from Thesa to Donald and her mother, and brochures, guides,
memos, clippings, and articles mainly relating to the Peace Corps with some items specific to Donald Jolly's military career.
The collection also consists of ephemera in the form of stamps, handkerchiefs, framed artwork, flower patches, a Ten Won note,
parchment, a plaque, travel related items, postcards, yearbooks, and the Korean game Yoot. The remainder of the collection
comprises some photos and slides, a few financial documents, a syllabus, and a copy of the Holy Bible belonging to Donald
Jolly (inscribed and annotated).
