Abstract: This collection contains the papers of Pomona College Classics professor Harry J. Carroll Jr. Professor Carroll taught at Pomona from 1949 until 1983, and was a key actor in the development of Pomona's art history program. He taught classes on ancient Greek and Roman art and lectured both at Pomona and Claremont Graduate University for the Fine Arts program. Materials in the collection include lectures, notes, articles, photographs, correspondence, and scrapbooks created by himself and his wife Olive Carroll.

Biography / Administrative History

Harry J. Carroll Jr. was Professor of Classics at Pomona College from 1949 to 1983. Carroll was heavily involved with the Pomona College art and art history departments, teaching courses in Greek and Roman art and architecture and creating the Pomona-Scripps Joint Classics Program with Robert B. Palmer of Scripps college. A respected professor, in 1981 Carroll was awarded the Wig Distinguished Professor Award for excellence in teaching, the highest honor given to Pomona faculty. He is remembered through the annual Harry J. Carroll Memorial Lecture.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

This collection contains materials created by and about Professor Harry J. Carroll. Items include biographical materials, photographs, correspondence, materials from trips to Greece and world cruises, lectures, notes, articles, and other activities. Also includes a scrapbook of printed materials about Pomona College and a scrapbook of Olive Carroll's Mediterranean trip, titled "Argonautica".
